The truth is the only thing that matters here at this website. My goal is to purvey the truth, no matter how uncomfortable it may be at times. Here, there’s no political bias, no party inclinations, no one owns me, therefore I can day whatever I wish. I wanted to make that crystal clear before we get into this very serious discussion.
Over a year ago Russia invaded Ukraine and by doing so, set the world ablaze. Ever since the first Russian boot stepped into Ukraine, the balance of power has been unsteady. I think the war in Ukraine has shaken people from their sense of complacency. All of the sudden the world has realized we’re not quite as safe as we once believed. What no one wants to admit publicly, is that what happened in Ukraine could easily happen anywhere else, including the United States. One day everything s normal, the next we’re in an unprovoked war. These are serious times.
What I want to focus on specifically is the issue of whether America should support a war in Ukraine. This is one of the defining issues of our time, and I suggest we think very long and hard about it. History will judge us all impartially, we would do well to keep that in mind.
Currently a high percentage of American citizens believe that we should be supporting Ukraine. This is understandable. There’s no doubt that Ukraine is a victim, and that Russia was the aggressor. That’s not the whole story, there’s more going on here than it would seem. We have to get out of the mindset that everything has to be explained in 140 character or less. Remember, our goal here is the truth. As Oscar Wilde noted, “the truth is rarely pure and never simple”.
Some historians cater to the idea of a ‘just war’. Hardly anyone will support a war for the sake of war. Virtually everyone would agree that for there to be a war, there must be some justification for it (whatever that may be). I would agree with this idea, but in the same breath, I would also call into question whether any war for the past century has actually been ‘just’.
Lets briefly re-visit the wars America has fought. We went to war in Vietnam supposedly to prevent the insidious rise of ‘communism’. Only to find out later that American soldiers were lied to. At the time American citizens were scared witless over the bogeyman of communism. This was the era of McCarthyism and the infamous ‘red scare’. An enemy was created in the mind of Americans that didn’t exist, but it did make for an excellent excuse for war.
How about Korea? Supposedly we went to war to save innocent Koreans from the hands of a brutal regime. Here at least there was a kernel of truth. Korean citizens were being treated brutally by a dictatorial regime. However this was not the reason America went to war. Korea had been under dictatorial rule for decades and the American government didn’t care. It would come out much later that American leaders weren’t very interested in the suffering of Korean citizens as they were in the valuable resources on Korea. The public had no knowledge of this. They were told that innocents were suffering and that something had to be done. Never mind that the American military in many cases actually added to their suffering.
How about the Gulf Wars? The ‘butcher of Baghdad”, Saddam Hussein supposedly had “weapons of mass destruction” and it was imperative that the American military stop him. Here, there was also a kernel of truth. Saddam Hussein was a brutal man and I would agree that he should have beens stopped. The thing is, he really should’ve been stopped years before. Also, where were these ‘weapons of mass destruction’? Because we went to war twice and never found anything. Oh, and we also left Saddam Hussein in power, both times. Later the American public would learn that the Gulf Wars weren’t about stopping a mad dictator at all, instead it was over oil. Hussein was treating to cut America’s supply and it was only then we decided to declare war. He’d been slaughtering innocents for years and America never batted an eyelid.
The list goes on. The Cuban missile crisis. The ‘war on terror’ that has been going on and on to no end. The military establishment has a well established track record of lying to the public over and over. Rarely, if ever does military efforts ever resolve legitimate situations. This begs the serious question as to whether military intervention is ever ‘justified’.
All of which brings me back to the issues of Ukraine. Hopefully, you were able to notice a trend in the wars fought over the past 50+ years. Legitimate situations were held up as pretexts for war, when in reality it was just a false flag. A red herring if you will. The military had no interest in aiding the plight of innocents. With all that being said, doesn’t the current issue in Ukraine seem remarkably similar to the playbook of the past? Think about it; yes, Vladimir Putin is a dictator, no question. Putin has been running Russia like a mobster for many years now. Yes, Ukraine was unjustly invaded. Ukrainian citizen are dying, or have been displaced. There is a legitimate crisis here. I’m not going to dispute any of this. However, does the American government actually care?
Let’s think about this. Let’s consider the facts, what we know for certain.
Fact #1 = The Ukrainian government is deeply corrupt. There’s no getting around this, the Ukrainian government is one of the sleaziest governments on earth. They make China look enlightened. This may seem unpopular, but I personally have a hard time believing that President Vlodomyr Zelensky has been untouched by all this rank corruption.
Fact #2 = The American government essentially owns the Ukrainian government. If you believe that every leader in the world is there ‘by the will of the people’, I pity you. Lets face it, election interference happens to everyone, everywhere. Zelensky was ‘elected’ President despite never having any political experience and a very (ahem) generous donation from the American government to his campaign. So, the United Stated has essentially owned a deeply corrupt government, without bothering to change a thing. Sort of like what Putin has done with President Lukashenko of Belarus.
Fact #3 = As many lies as Putin has told about the war in Ukraine, the United States has matched him. I hate to say it, but the State Department has been telling an equal amount of lies. The US has officially claimed that we are not at war with Russia, despite the face we’ve not only been quite generous with our financial aid, but we’ve given Ukraine a slew of jets, tanks and even put American troops in Ukraine. But, hey, we’re not actually at war! So says the State Department. Yeah, sure.
Fact #4 = Despite all the funny business going on in Ukraine, despite the American military establishments long history of lying, Americans overwhelmingly support military invention in Ukraine. To my surprise, it wasn’t a week into Russia’s invasion that American citizens were supportive of military intervention, all without getting the full story. I find this to be very interesting.
In conclusion, I’ve brought all of this up to get everyone to be smarter. As American citizens, we still have the right of free speech (for now anyway). I take advantage of this right to explain that we are all being lied to, by our media, by our government, even by the commander in chief. Do before we all start getting on the war bandwagon, I’m asking that we all think through this. I’ll say it bluntly, I have no idea why exactly the American government is so eager to support Ukraine, but I seriously doubt that the military establishment actually cares about the plight of Ukrainian civilians. Remember what we talked about earlier? The military establishment has a proven track record of taking legitimate situations and manipulating it to their own ends. Which is exactly what I fear is going on in Ukraine right now. I mentioned earlier that history will judge us all impartially, and I believe that applies here. Whatever is going on in Ukraine, is clearly different than the narrative being paraded on the media. Something is clearly wrong here, similar to the situations in Vietnam, Korea and the Gulf Wars. My concern is that we’re making the same mistake all over again. All I’m really advocating for here, is that we try to be wiser than our forebears.
